MATHEMATICS

 

NCEA Level 1

 

J    Who can enrol?

Any student who intends entering for NCEA Level 1 and wishes to gain credits through Achievement Standards and/or Unit Standards in Mathematics.

 

J    Costs:

There will be a Homework Book Fee of $3-$10.

 

J    Course outline:

This course is mainly for Year 11 students and will follow the New Zealand Mathematics curriculum.  Units will include:

* Algebra            * Statistics        * Geometry

* Measurement   * Trigonometry   * Number 

Skills will include problem solving techniques and strategies.

 

J    Assessment:

The course will offer a range of assessment opportunities, depending on students' needs.  Some possible routes are outlined below:

 Achievement Standards will be assessed at credit, merit and excellence levels.

 

A maximum of 24 credits is available to students as part of their NCEA Level 1 requirements.

 

The numeracy component (8 credits) for NCEA

Level 1 is also covered by this course.

MATHEMATICS APPLIED I

 

NZAMT National Certificate Level 1 and Unit Standards

 

J    Who can enrol?

Any Year 11 student who may find the Year 11 Mathematics curriculum content too challenging.

 

J    Costs:

The Certification fee to NZAMT, approximately $5.

 

J    Course outline:

The aim of this course is to reinforce and encourage further development of maths ideas and skills.  These skills will be useful in vocational and everyday situations.  They include key skills, problem solving, communication, work & study  and social & co-operative skills.

The student receives a certificate in Mathematics Applied I at the end of the course.  The New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT) issues this certificate.

The student has the opportunity of gaining their numeracy component (8 credits) towards their NCEA Level 1 certificate through the Unit Standard assessments.

 

J    Assessment:

Internal assessment:

³                  Unit Standards will be assessed at certain dates in the year.

³                  Mathematics Applied I is by continual assessment and set assignments.

 

J    This course leads to:

Achievement Standards & Unit Standards combination (see Year 11 Mathematics) or Maths Applied II and Unit Standards.
